FAMILY AND COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT IN SUPPORT OF HEALTHY EATING SUCCESS STORY
The Grandview Coordinated Health Team came up with the idea of having a fruit cart as a way of getting our students to eat more fruit; but we didn’t have the money to purchase a cart. The husband of one of the team members is very talented and he agreed to make a fruit cart. The cart exceeded our expectations and we were all thrilled; we then needed fruit.
The health teacher at Grandview went to Westborn Market and talked to the manager. He was so excited about our program that he agreed to give us the fruit at cost or below so that the students would only have to pay 25 cents for a serving of fruit, you can’t buy fruit for that price! Now we always have apples and bananas and 2-3 different types of fruit in our cart. This fall the manager of Westborn Market agreed to deliver the fruit for half of what he usually charges.
The Grandview fruit cart has been a huge success. Parents have become involved; one of the mothers comes in early to get the fruit ready and another mother stands at the main entrance with the cart and then takes it around to the classrooms. The students are allowed to eat their fruit as a snack in the classrooms. Some students buy more than one piece, many teachers buy the fruit and even some of the parents will buy fruit when they bring the students to school. We started the program in January 2006 and by June we had sold 15,000 pieces of fruit. We sell about 200 pieces of fruit a day. It is absolutely amazing to see these students excited about buying and eating fruit.
