BEFORE SCHOOL PHYSICAL ACTIVITY FOR STUDENTS AND STAFF!
SUCCESS STORY

The AuTrain-Onota Public School staff is aware of the importance of good health, including nutrition and exercise. We have been fortunate to be the recipients of a Team Nutrition grant as well as a Healthy Fruits and Vegetable grant. These grants have greatly helped our staff and students learn more about the need for good nutrition and physical activity.

Our students and staff are overweight; students come to school tired, unmotivated, and generally lacking the desire or ability to participate in physical activities often because of weight related problems.

In our 2006-2007 school year plan the teaching staff agreed to implement an All-School Morning Physical Activities Program! All teachers, paraprofessionals and students take part in this program. Each morning we have a minimum of ten minutes of physical activity. Each teacher rotates planning and leading the sessions for one month at a time.

Within days we noticed that the children appear to be more alert, more and more willing to try and participate in different activities and they come back to their classrooms with smiles on their faces!

We are in the process of monitoring our student's progress - initial data was collected in early October. The areas assessed will be checked three times during the school year to determine each child's individual progress.

This, although in its early stages, has already proven to be a success. We see all children participating; even those students who were reluctant in the beginning are participating more and more each day. The All-School Morning Physical Activities Program not only gives us all a fresh academic start, it seems to be giving us a happy start to the day as well!
