HEALTHIER A LA CARTE
SUCCESS STORY

The Manistique Area Schools Health Team used its $500 mini-grant to improve the lunch choices on the high school ala carte menu. Our team had previously completed the HSAT and one of our goals was to make healthier food choices for students. The Food Service Director was hesitant to purchase foods that might not sell and would increase the spending on their budget.

The team, which consists of some adults and four students, met and brainstormed ideas of what would be more nutritious lunch choices yet choices the students would buy. The students surveyed their friends and we compiled a list. From that list, food was purchased and the new choices available were advertised throughout the school. Some of the new items purchased were; fresh fruit, yogurt, jello and pudding cups, cereal, granola bars, baked chips and salads are available if students pre-order them in the morning. In the past, the only things available on the ala carte menu were pizza, nachos, Bosco sticks, chips, candy and large cookies. The committee was very pleased with the success of the activity. Mrs. Chartier, our Food Service Director, reports that the new items are selling well. Yogurt, baked chips and jello are selling well and a few salads are being ordered but the surprise is that the cereal and milk are selling like mad. They are selling up to 10-12 boxes of cereal and milk a day for lunch, a much better choice than nachos and pop.

Next school year, our school is changing the way our ala carte is going to be set up. Instead of having it in another section of the cafeteria, it is going to be right alongside the regular hot lunch line which will give the students even more choices for lunch. We feel this is a great success. Thank you.
