Calibrating Your 180 Digi-Walker Pedometer
Step-Length Calibration
- Measure an area 30 feet in length, such as a long corridor.
- Walk the 30-foot length three times, each time counting your steps. Be sure to walk with a normal gait.
- Add together the number of steps taken each time to find your total number of steps. For example, assume it takes 11 steps to walk 30 feet, then 9 steps the second time you walk the length, and finally 10 steps for your third trip. You have a total of 30 steps taken during those three times.
- Find your average number of steps by dividing your total number of steps by 3. Using the example above, your average number of steps would be 10. Round to the nearest 0.1 feet.
- Find your stride by dividing 30 by your average number of steps. Round to the nearest 0.05 feet. In the previous example, we would divide 30 by 10, resulting in a stride of 3 feet. The following common strides have been calculated for you:
10 average steps = 3-foot stride, OR 10 = 3
common strides: 10 = 3.0; 10.5 = 2.85; 11 = 2.7; 11.5 = 2.6; 12 = 2.5; 12.5 = 2.4; 13 = 2.0
- Press the gray oval button (with an arrow around it) on the far right side of the display panel until the black horizontal cursor bar appears under the heading DISTANCE (MI).
- Press the smaller gray button located between the two oval buttons. Note that the number “1.00” appears. Wait a few seconds and “1.00” is replaced by the actual mileage number.
- Press the small gray button again and, before the step-length number (1.00) disappears, press the same button to set your stride. It will increase by 0.05 (feet) with each press of the button. Once you’ve set the correct stride, as calculated in Step 5 above, your pedometer is ready to use!
- Use the yellow button to reset your STEP ACTIVITY back to “0” at the end of the day.

How To Wear Your Pedometer
The best place to wear your pedometer for the most accurate reading is close to your waist and above your knee. Generally, pedometer users find it easiest to clip it to a waist band or belt at the waist or just below the waist level. Use the safety strap to secure the pedometer to your waistband. Placing it in your pocket is not recommended.

Troubleshooting
If you think your pedometer is not measuring accurately, or if unrecognizable symbols appear on the display, first try to reinstall your battery. If this does not correct the problem, you may want to replace your battery with a new one (LR-44). If you feel your pedometer is not measuring your footsteps or miles accurately, reset your pedometer to zero footsteps and 0.00 miles while it is clipped on your waistband. Then take exactly 50 footsteps (25 right steps, 25 left steps). While standing in place, open your pedometer lid to see if it registers approximately 50 steps (48 to 52 steps). If your pedometer registers outside of this range, you may need to readjust its position, attempting to place it on your waistband in direct vertical alignment with your knee. If problems persist, please call Christi Downing at (517) 335-8771 or email her at downingch@michigan.gov.

Replacing the Battery
Hold the pedometer upside-down by gripping the belt-clip with your fingers. This should leave a thin, rectangular slot facing upwards. Slip a penny into the thin, rectangular slot and gently twist the penny to pry open the casing. With the back casing off, you will see the LR-44 disc battery held in a retaining ring. Using your fingernail, gently pop the battery out of its retaining ring. Then slip your new battery into place. Be sure to clip the casing plate back into its correct position upon reassembling your pedometer.
